Chausie cat is one of the newest breed – is registered with TICA-e only in July 1995 – and was created by crossing the African jungle cat (Felis chaus) and domestic cats. African jungle cat also known as marsh cat, and resides in Egypt and South Asia where one can find, as its name suggests, the wetlands and forest areas. Jungle cat is one of the largest small wild cats, and can have from 7 to 16 pounds.
TICA recognizes temporary Chausie cat in its short three colors, with popular body hair – all are the same color of wild jungle cats: black, black with silver and gold Abyssinian pattern, which varies from yellow color (similar colored Abyssinian cats) to bright reddish tan.
As kittens, Chausie breed often has stripes or dots, or how mature and patterns disappear and remains a beautiful fur with an Abyssinian pattern, with every hair in ideal cases of three to seven ‘lines‘ colors.
In adult cats, stripes on the legs remain visible. The head is a moderate wedge shape with angular snout and rounded pads mustache. Eyes are large and slightly inclined towards the lower edge of medium-sized ears. (Tufts of hair in the ears, like its wild ancestors, are highly desirable when Chausie cats.) The yellow and gold are the colors of eyes are preferred, but the color is acceptable and hazelnut.
A special feature of the cats chausie its relatively short tail – only three-quarters the length of the common domestic cat tail – but the cat’s tail chausie provides only slightly below the hock hind legs. For this is characteristic of the recessive gene responsible: inserted ‘shortening’ tail is not permitted for this breed.
Chausie cat becomes famous because of its speed and agility: it can jump vertically up to a height of nearly two meters, and its long hind legs allow her great speed! With the body of rectangular shape, full, broad chest and strong bones, Chausie cat would, ideally, should be twice as long as its height.
Therefore, this big cat is often twice higher than the average domestic cat, but can be up to three times the weight! In spite of their size and recent wild ancestors, Chausie cats are cuddly and affectionate and also very loyal to their owners. When it comes to behavior, describing them as ‘like dogs‘ – perhaps because of their loyalty and devotion, as well as the fact that they are extremely intelligent: they make the toys when they throw away!
