In the early 20th century, the Club of lovers of Siamese cats in the UK has decided to encourage the cultivation of only blue-eyed Siamese cats, which are now typical of the breed, and a few completely brown cats were forgotten until the fifties.
Two growers in the UK began to grow monochromatic brown cat chocolate color Siamese, not dark brown paint newly arrived Burmese cats. At that time the only recognized foreign breed – except Siamese – were Russian Blue and Abyssinian.
First kitty new colors gave birth in 1952 and was the result of crossing a Siamese cat black marks (carrier of the gene for chocolate-brown color) and short-haired black cat (which is created by crossing black cats and black cats mark). It became the foundation of the new breed of sleek and graceful cats in the beginning, in 1958, the UK registered as chestnut brown oriental shorthairs.
Approximately at the same time, a pair of chestnut brown oriental shorthair cats arrived in the United States to be there established breed, and there are registered as havana cats – but they are not named after the capital of Cuba, rather than by breed rabbits of the same color!
The breed was recognized in 1959 in the US, but is officially called ”havana brown cat“. British “hazel” cat continued to be imported in the US and registered as havana brown until 1973, when the CFA accepted the Oriental shorthair breed, and from then onwards, and were imported cats are registered as chestnut Oriental Shorthair cats.
To add to the confusion became even greater, color oriental shorthair cat in the USA called “brown“, today in the UK confusing name “havana“!
Therefore, havana brown cat developed as an exclusively North American breeds and standards for display are different from those in the UK. In the United States have banned the use of breeders Siamese cats in the breeding program, and therefore, the US cat is far more powerful animal, with a more rounded face and slightly longer coat.
On the other hand, in the UK tends body type that is more conjoined, so that is why the British cat havana much louder than their American relatives!
In both cases, cats have long legs, a head that is slightly longer than broad and has a definite “break” on the nose between the oval green eyes. Havana cat really has a rich, dark color very expensive cigars!
Given that the Russian blue cats used in breeding program of Havana, was introduced recessive gene for diluted blue color, which led to the occasional occurrence of gently purple (lavender) havana cats.
